Sweet Shqip

This article was published in the Winston-Salem Journal the day after Christmas, highlighting the projects I'm currently doing in my site, Bajram Curri. Public knowledge of this country in America is very low and any articles such as this that raise awareness of this country is a step in the right direction.

"The north has been more isolated than other parts of Albania because of the poor road conditions," she said. "In order to get to my community from the capital (Tirana) by public transportation, I have to travel through Kosovo because the roads in Albania are in very poor conditions." Mickey said the rugged terrain and lack of development have made the region an attractive place for extreme-sport enthusiasts to camp and hike."

This is a small victory for myself and I believe reassurance for my family and friends back home that what I'm doing here is making a difference, even if it's slowly. More than 480 Peace Corps volunteers have served in Albania since 1992, communism fell in the country in 1991. In 1997 the organization closed operations over safety concerns for the volunteers and returned in 2003. There are currently 80 volunteers in Albania currently and over 40 more volunteers entering service this March in Albania. Click here to read the full article and view the documentary that I'm working on.
